Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has admitted he expects captain Reece James to show more leadership qualities.
The England international returned from injury in last week’s 2-1 defeat at Liverpool. And the Italian boss welcomed the star’s return, revealing that. He had spoken privately as he sought to build leadership in the dressing room UFABET
“I’ve spoken to him and I expect more from him in terms of leadership in the dressing room and things.” Maresca said ahead of Sunday’s trip to Newcastle. “He’s doing well, it’s going well. Reece James in the process of developing. But from Reece I expect more leadership.”
“Most of the time when they are captain. They think because they are captain they have to do more than usual. For me, because you are captain you have to give more. You have to do more than anyone else.”
“And sometimes, ‘Okay, I’m the captain, I can do less.’ No, he’s one of the captains and I expect from him, and my team-mates expect from him. That he always has to give more in terms of overall leadership.”
Since being handed the armband by Maresca’s predecessor Mauricio Pochettino. James has played only 12 times for the club meaning his role as captain has largely been confined to his off-field influence.
